Some days are jewels of discovery and some days are sleepers. We need positive stimulation, if we are to discover much of value and when something exciting or inspiring happens it is great. But today I did not wake up with a spirit of discovery!
I feared today was going to be one of those days when nothing extraordinary happened and in fact might end up stinking.
A sore throat, a summer cold, accompanied by a feeling of being too tired to get charged up seemed to plague me. When I did get charged up it was in the wrong way! The negative charge began when I left the bathroom door open and a curious cat came in. The fresh air from an open bathroom window and a glimpse of the great outdoors was inviting to our big male cat. He easily jumped up to the window for fresh air and a view of the pond in our back yard. In doing so he also knocked a potted plant from the window sill. The container broke on the bathroom floor and dirtscattered all over the place. Next, I trudged to the basement to get the shop-vac for a much dreaded morning clean up. The shop-vac was not emptied or cleaned the last time I used it, so a foul air was blown out and my morning literally stunk!
Upon arrival to the university to teach my Freshman Advantage class I was greeted by Jennifer (a past student, now employee and valued friend). Jennifer show me a little flat metal angel, something like a charm piece that had stuck to the bottom of her shoe. She asked me if it was a good omen? I told her it definitely was and I felt it was significant.
A positive spirit seemed to grow from that moment on, with my freshmen students continuing to do excellent work in the studio. Near the end of the morning studio class, a past student who is getting married in July came to me with a special request. She wanted me to paint her wedding shoes! The freshmen in the room met Nicole and could not believe she wanted me to paint her wedding shoes. The synergy was too much, I had been talking to them about: transformation art" !!
Next lunch with a fellow teacher named Raymond further stimulated my thoughts and bolstered my spirit. After lunch I met with a wonderful person about a commission to paint the four seasons in a unique way!
Wow the day was transforming in a wonderful way...
Finally at days end in the Jefferson City Schnuck’s Grocery Store, I was checking out and I heard a voice “Professor Martin?”, I recognized a student from the past, she was with her infant son. We had a great chat and I learned her son’s name is Terry. Next I told her about “Stories for Samuel” on www.firstfish.weebly.com
I said to my student, the stories comprise an online book, they are free and created as encouragement for anyone who wants to read them. The stories are especially for the next generation like Terry and Samuel!
Later I reflected upon the little boy who I shared a name with ( he was named after his grandfather). Terry’s middle name is Samuel and my student’s name is Amber. My grandson Samuel’s, mother’s name is Amber!
What synergy and my stinky day smelled like roses!
