Letter from Terry's son and Samuel's daddy, Patrick. The apple does not fall too far from the tree!
Samuel,
Today, as I write this, your Grandpa Terry, turns 61 years old! And you aren’t even 1 year old yet! Your Grandpa Terry has written you quite a few amazing stories, some quite funny, some very special. Some even make your dad cry when he reads them!
As you hear these stories (and even read them when you get REALLY big), you’ll begin to see some of the reasons that your Grandpa Terry wanted to write to you. But today, I wanted to tell you a different story. I wanted to tell you about your Grandpa Terry.
You see, your Grandpa Terry loves little kids. And that’s really special-because some one else loved kids, and that person is Jesus. In the Bible, we read stories of how Jesus welcomed little kids when everyone else just wanted them to be quiet, and stay in their rooms. Jesus wanted little boys and girls to run, laugh, dance, and play in his presence. I think part of the reason your Grandpa Terry loves boys and girls so much, is because he loves Jesus, and Jesus has given your Grandpa Terry a big, huge, caring heart.

When I was a little boy, I remember riding with your Grandpa Terry in his little green truck. We called it “the flash truck!” Later on, I would ride with him in a big blue truck- and after that in a fast white car called a firebird. What a name for a car! Your Grandpa Terry would take me to school. Sometimes, when I had a cold, he would take me to his work, and let me play with his paints. Other times, he would take me along with him while he visited some of his friends. My favorite times were when I had a peanut butter cookie, and your grandpa Terry would let me dip the cookie in his coffee before I ate it!
Many times, your Grandpa Terry and I would talk for a long long time in the car. You see, even though I was a little kid, and was sometimes very silly, and sometimes misbehaved very much, your Grandpa Terry always listened to me like what I had to say was very important. He always wanted to know what I thought about something, even if that something was very small. Other times, your Grandpa Terry and I would see someone walking along the road, and your Grandpa Terry would always stop, and see if that person needed any help. Sometimes, the person would need help, and even if your Grandpa Terry was in the middle of something important, he would help that someone who needed help. Even if your Grandpa Terry didn’t have a lot of money with him, he would buy that someone a little food, or get them a little gas so they could drive in their car. Do you know why? Because, just like Jesus, your Grandpa Terry knew that people matter much more than time or money. I’m not always very good at this-some times I think I’m so busy, that I can’t stop to listen to some one. But our wonderful King Jesus, he always knew that people, even if they were small, or sorta weird, or not very nice, were beautiful because God, His Father, made them! Your Grandpa Terry knows this, and lots of times, Jesus uses your Grandpa Terry to show all kinds of people the love of God. Samuel, you know by now that your Grandpa Terry is a wonderful artist, and he has created lots of beautiful paintings. Samuel, have you ever heard the word masterpiece? A masterpiece is an amazing, beautiful piece of art. You have to be an amazing, wonderful artist to make a masterpiece! Your Grandpa Terry has created so many beautiful paintings, BUT-there’s a different, MORE beautiful masterpiece that I wanted to tell you about. In the Bible, Jesus’s friend Paul wrote that we are God’s masterpieces! Isn’t that amazing? In your Grandpa Terry’s life, there have been some sad times. Those sad times are the dark colors that God used when He was painting your Grandpa Terry’s life. There have been wonderful, funny, silly, smiley times. Those times are the bright happy colors that God used. But over these 61 years, God had one goal for your Grandpa Terry-to create a masterpiece. And that’s just what your Grandpa Terry’s life is-a masterpiece, so the whole world can see the beautiful work and never-stopping, never-giving up, always and forever love. |
