Observance of “Earth Day”
VIEW A PIECE OF ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE ART AND WRITE A RESPONSE
Many contemporary artists assume a role as a social reform advocate. Professor Martin and several art students have created environmental awareness art pieces. We hope LEAD students will reflect upon the art:
Name: Karinne Lane
LEAD ID #: 0000000000000000
Art piece: “Up the Hill”
Statement: This certain art piece resonates with me not only by the picture provided but in the artist’s own statement, “one generation plants the tree, the next enjoys the shade”.The artist explains that he represents the older trees, offering shade for the younger trees. In my mind, he is telling me that when he is offering “shade”, he is actually offering assistance, help, guidance, a breath of air in this complicated everyday life we as people (especially younger people) live, that is full of obligations and responsibility that are sometimes too much to bare.
In another sense, I see this painting as an example of coming forward and preparing the world for another generation. Global warming is such a controversial topic right now, and we know what we can do to prevent it but the thing is, we usually choose not too. We assume we will leave this planet sooner than the doom of global warming will arrive, and we aren’t thinking ahead for the next generations. The time to save the world is now, and will continue to be “now” through each generation. The younger generations should be allowed to enjoy the shade, but they should also be providing shade for the generations after them. If we don’t, the trees our older generations will eventually die off, and so will
